Arrow felt his body start to heat up. The smell of hot fur made him open his amber eyes. He wished he hadn’t. A stream of warm, morning light filtered into his den and nearly blinded him. He placed one of his round paws over his muzzle, as if he could push daylight away. But it was to no avail. Soon his pack would start making noises anyways. The two year old canine sat up slowly, dragging his two front legs across the cool earth. He opened his jaws into a large yawn, showing a fascinating set of fangs. Arrow blinked away his sleep then stood. His shoulders hit metal as he squeezed through the entrance of the shed he called home. His was the biggest of them and he had it all to himself, thanks for himself not having a mate. He padded over to the center of their camp and found a large puddle of fresh rain-water and he bent down to lap at it. After he quenched his thirst he couldn’t help watching his reflection. The skinny face and long muzzle of his pure breed made him look different than the rest of the pack. He had a deep chest and a skinny waist. His legs were lean and long. That was all Whippet. Arrow hadn’t been crossed with anything and out on the streets that was a bit strange. He stomped in the reflection, spraying up icy drops. His whiskers twitched and he ran out of camp at a quick pace. Although he was one of the smallest dogs in the North Pack, he was the quickest by far. It was in his breed to be quick. Arrow leaped over a fallen tree that the lightning had knocked over a night before. Before he jumped he knew it was going to be a mistake. When his paws hit the ground again he felt a sharp pain in his front leg and toppled over. As he lay on his side he sighed. He had an old injury and it refused to heal. The whippet got into a sitting position and slowly stood up. Arrow pushed his paws onto the ground, testing if it was okay to run again. He didn’t feel anything so he sprinted off again. Arrow came to a large ditch and halted. This marked the end of his territory and the start of the East Pack’s. He perked his ears at the smell of small footsteps. In the next second he saw a rabbit come up from the ditch and onto his territory. It saw Arrow and ran off in the direction of the Ice Water. Arrow barked and gave chase. He was only a few feet behind it. If it ran across the Ice Water he’d miss it. The Ice Water was dangerous and no one was aloud to go on it, not even the leader himself. Arrow leaped just as the rabbit was about to step onto the danger zone. He caught it in his jaws and shook it hard until it stopped kicking. Arrow dropped it onto the ground and panted. At least he had breakfast to bring back to camp.
